Obiano, NCC take anti-piracy war to Onitsha: Anambra State Government in collaboration with the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) has taken bolder steps to fight piracy in major commercial cities of the state, especially in Onitsha.
The Zonal Director of NCC, Mr. Emeka Ogbonna, in a letter to traders in Sir Emeka Offor and Jerry plazas, Onitsha, informed the leadership of the markets that his office in collaboration with Governor Willie Obiano, has taken notice of alleged copyright offences in the markets.
Mr. Ogbonna said stakeholders in the copyright industry and the copyright owners had drawn the commission’s attention to the high level of copyright infringement going on within the markets.
“This is the illegal reproduction and usage of protected works in memory cards, MP3, MP4 devices for commercial purposes,” he said.
He disclosed that the NCC’s war against copyright offenders remained the cardinal point of its Director General’s policy to rid the markets across the country of copyright offences and pirates in order to encourage creativity amongst Nigerian children. Mr. Ogbonna was reacting to a letter written by the leadership of Musical Product Dealers’ Association of Nigeria drawing the attention of NCC to alleged copyright offences going on in some plazas in the commercial city of Onitsha.
He said Governor Willie Obiano as part of his administration’s resolve to bring sanity back to the state, has declared his interest to partner with the NCC to consolidate the fight against piracy and other copyright infringements.
